Yellowstone is one of the greatest television successes in recent times, and Paramount is now trying to cement its legacy by expanding the franchise into a variety of spinoffs.
There have already been a few successful offshoots from the flagship show, set during different periods. There are now more in the pipeline, designed to flesh out the universe and immerse viewers in the story even further.
Along with these television spinoffs, there’s great potential to expand the franchise in other ways. It even has a chance of beating the likes of Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead to be the most extensive television IP in history.
The Spinoffs That Cemented the Franchise
Taylor Sheridan and John Linson’s series, inspired by one of the best national parks in the USA, has gone from a gritty cable drama to one of the most powerful entertainment franchises of the decade.
It began as a simple show about ranchers defending their land in Montana, and has now grown into a complex web of sequels and prequels that have served to flesh out the Dutton family tree in rich detail.
Even before the Kevin Costner-led series ended in 2024, Paramount had plans in place to introduce a range of spinoffs. The first of these was 1883:
A Yellowstone Origin Story, which hit screens in 2021 and provided an origin story about how the Duttons first came to settle in Montana. The 10 episode miniseries starred Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Sam Elliott, and was met with widespread critical acclaim.
This was followed by 1923 in 2022, which serves as a sequel to 1883 and ran for two seasons of eight episodes each. This was another huge addition to the franchise, with massive stars Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford in the leading roles.
It garnered positive reviews as well, and has a 90 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Dutton Legacy Continues in Other Planned Spinoffs
It seems that there’s no limit to how far the Yellowstone universe can expand, as there are numerous other planned spinoffs that are set for release in the years ahead. 6666 could be released this year or next, and it will focus on the legendary Four Sixes Ranch in Texas.
This one could have even more of a Western vibe than the other offerings, as it’s expected to delve into cowboy tradition and reflect the grittier aspects of Yellowstone.
Production is also underway for The Madison, which will serve as a sequel series to Yellowstone. Matthew McConaughey has reportedly been in talks to star in the leading role, with Kurt Russell, Patrick J. Adams and Beau Garrett also potentially taking on key parts.
Some rumors suggest that this one could be ready for release in 2025, highlighting how Paramount are keen to double down on Yellowstone’s success as quickly as possible.
There are various other spinoffs that have been hinted at, with Y: Marshals set to premiere in 2026. This offering will be a procedural, focusing on Luke Grimes’ Kayce Dutton on CBS.
How Else Can the Yellowstone Empire Expand?
One thing that Yellowstone hasn’t explored yet is the expansion into other forms of entertainment. This is something that worked well for Game of Thrones and the Walking Dead, with both of these franchises prevalent in merchandise, video games, and the online casino market.
